I am supporting a call for supermarkets to highlight the very best of produce by incorporating a ‘Buy British’ section online.
I signed an open letter to chief executives asking them to create a tab to collate produce from across the UK so customers have the choice to buy British during their online shop.
I am one of more than 100 MPs to sign the letter organised by my colleague Luke Evans.
The letter champions the work of Britain’s farmers in ensuring food security, supporting strong local economies, and preserving and protecting the environment.
It says that an online Buy British tab would empower the public to be able to make easier choices over what food they would like to purchase.
This is a very simple way for supermarket shoppers to have much easier and better choices when it comes to where their food has come from.
In a way it closes an online loophole because most supermarkets do clearly label British food in their stores, it is just not that clear now for the millions who choose to shop online.
Making it easier for customers to see the brilliant British food they can buy is also supporting our farmers. This is a win for all and I hope the supermarkets will look at getting the 'Buy British' tab on their websites as soon as possible.
