I have been given a tour and briefing at one of the West Midlands’ biggest employers – Birmingham International Airport.
I met with aviation director Tom Screen who showed me around and gave a presentation about the airport and its direction of travel.
Developments include HS2 starting to build a rail link to the airport in 2026. It is also hoping to be net zero by 2033.
Other good news is a security hall should be completed in 2024 and Easyjet is coming to the airport next year.
Thank you to Tom and his staff for taking the time to discuss the exciting plans and future Birmingham International has as the UK’s seventh biggest airport.
It is a major employer of tens of thousands – some of them from Stourbridge and the Black Country - and a big part of the regional economy and our transport links to other parts of the world for business and leisure.
I was amazed to hear that 83% of the English and Welsh population are within a two-hour road or rail journey of the airport. This very much shows the potential the airport has especially when HS2 is operational.
