As part of my role on the online safety committee, today the Government have announced new protections to prevent children from accessing pornography online.
This further strengthens the draft Online Safety Bill, making the internet a safer place for children.
• It is too easy for children to access pornography online and parents deserve peace of mind that their children are able to use the internet safely and appropriately.
• That is why we are introducing new protections through our Online Safety Bill to prevent children from accessing pornographic material – all pornography sites, social media providers, and video-sharing platforms will have a legal duty to verify that those accessing pornographic material are over 18 years old or face a fine of up to 10 per cent of global turnover.
• This will ensure that children can only access websites appropriate to their age, protecting them from seeing things no child should see.
The online safety bill will be truly ground breaking.
