I visited Redhill School on Friday 27th January for the Youth Speaks public speaking competition organised by Stourbridge Rotary Club.
Redhill, Haybridge High School, and Pedmore High School took part in this round of the event that aims to offer young people an experience of speaking on a public platform as members of a team. The Judges were Dilwyn Scott, who is the President of Stourbridge Speakers Club, Rob Waldron who is the Area President of the Speakers Club and John Yeates who was the Past President of Stourbridge Rotary Club. There will be three further rounds of the competition over the coming months before the winner is announced.
The topics up for discussion were whether animals should have rights that was proposed by Haybridge, that Britain should abolish the monarchy was the subject for Redhill and Pedmore discussed whether Covid has revolutionised the education system.
I was only there for the first part but I was very impressed with the challenging questions and with the speaking skills of all the pupils. Many thanks to the rotary club for inviting me and for organising the event. It is important that young people learn public speaking skills.
