Suzanne Webb, MP for Stourbridge, has welcomed the news that the Conservative Government has delivered on its manifesto pledge to enshrine the historic £33.9 billion funding increase for the NHS into law by 2023/24.
This is the first time that any Government has put such a commitment in legislation, ensuring service improvements for millions of patients.
The record funding boost will help to deliver on other manifesto commitments such as delivering 50,000 more nurses and 50 million more GP surgery appointments – in addition to the extra funding that has been committed to build 40 new hospitals and upgrade 20 more.
It will be one of the first pieces of domestic legislation to go through Parliament since the Government took office, placing the NHS at the top of the agenda.
Suzanne Webb MP said: “The NHS is a treasured institution that is the envy of the world and this Government is delivering the funding that it needs to continue to care for our communities.
“I am thrilled that the NHS Funding Bill has been brought to Parliament. As the MP for Stourbridge I will be working with the Government to ensure that the funding filters through to our local NHS, so local people receive the healthcare they need.
“In the coming months I will be visiting local NHS services and meeting the Doctors, Nurses and NHS staff that make sure that we are looked after. I will also be working closely with Dudley Group NHS Trust to make sure the additional funding is put to good use in improving services at Corbett Hospital and Russells Hall Hospital.”
Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Matt Hancock said: “A year after we launched our ambitious long-term plan for the NHS, I am honoured to be making parliamentary history by setting in motion the NHS Funding Bill, demonstrating this Government’s ironclad commitment to the NHS.
“With this unprecedented bill, we will enshrine in law the largest cash settlement in NHS history – bringing the total annual budget to almost £150 billion within five years.
“This funding bill will empower the NHS and it’s world class clinicians to deliver their bold 10-year plan.
“They can do so safe in the knowledge this Government is giving them the financial certainty and support to revolutionise prevention, detection, and treatment of thousands of patients over the coming days.”
